Vellano - La Cantina

La Cantina is part of our hill farm 'Bel Exil', and as its name suggests, once housed the estate's wine press. Recently rebuilt in het traditional Tuscan style with thick stone walls, chestnut-beamed ceilings and tiled floors, but incorporating all the advantages of modern conveniences.

Groundfloor (30 m2): living/dining/kitchen area with electric oven and hobs, fridge/freezer, double sink, comfortable sofa that converts to a double bed, cast-iron log-burning heater, a small lobby with fully automatic washing machine and beyond, a bathroom with shower, toilet and handbasin.
First floor (21 m2): An open tread staircase leads to a spacious bedroom with a double and a single bed (a baby cot is also available on request) and a door opening to a large paved terrace overlooking an olive grove, a wood with chestnut trees and a beautifully landscaped garden.

About the surroundings

The nearest village (1 km) is Vellano (500 mt alt.), pinned like a painting on top of the mountain. It offers a bar, a bakery, a pizzeria and a post-office. Vellano is part of the ten early medieval villages known as the 'Castella' which are situated along the valleys of the Torbola and Forfora. Recently, in order to conserve its historical character, the whole region was designated protected area and therefore no new building construction is allowed. The landscape is outstandingly beautiful, with hills and mountains densely wooded with chestnut and pine, olive groves and fruit trees. As well as asphalt roads, all these villages are connected by footpaths for walking holidays and have all been clearly charted by the 'Valleriana Trekking'. The height of this mountain landscape varies from 100 m to the Battifolle at 1106 m and is known as the 'Valdinievole'in the province of Pistoia and in the heart of Tuscany. Down in the valley (6 km) is Pescia. There is a ski-resort in Abetone (60km) and there are beach-resorts at Viareggio and Lido di Camaiore (40km). Nearer at hand is the walled city of Lucca and the thermal bath/spa centre Montecatini Terme, which also offers an 18-hole golf course. Within easy reach, too, there are several swimming pools, tennis courts, pony trekking and many excellent and inexpensive restaurants specialising in regional dishes and good wines.

How to get there

Vellano is at a distance of 15 min. from Pescia. Travelling time by car or train from Pescia to Florence or Pisa is plm. 1 hour. Both cities have an international airport and possibilities of carrental.
